Zug Armory Transformation

This stone building in Zug dates from the 19th century and is listed as a historic monument. It was reduced to its basic structure before extensive dry walling work was carried out on all four levels. It now contains the civil and high courts of the Canton of Zug as well as the city library. Both the owner and the architect decided on plasterboard systems, suited to preserving the historic building’s integrity (as opposed to concrete or steel), to balance construction irregularities and meet stringent fire protection, sound insulation, energy efficiency and building physics constraints. The judges were very impressed by the excellent collaboration between all project parties and the flow of information and know-how coupled with consistent use of plasterboard systems throughout the building to meet or exceed the demanding performance requirements of the project.

Yugoslav Film Archive Museum

The Film Archive Museum is a fabulous restoration project refurbished in an eclectic mixture of renaissance style with elements of romanticism. The original design dates from the 19th century and the individual plaster elements were reproduced using gypsum plaster based on original photographs. The building now has three modern floors of galleries, in harmony with the original design, completed under the supervision of the city authorities. This aesthetically impressive building centres round the original ceremonial hall, which will remain a national asset to be enjoyed for many generations. The jury felt that the intricate plaster work restoration recreated the original features of the building. The ceremonial hall, in particular, is a great example of how old historic buildings can blend with new modern features.

Saint-Martin’s Church

The restoration of the vaulted ceilings in this 16th century Roman church were reinstated to their original state using modern techniques including the use of Megastil steel frames and carefully applied plaster. Due to difficulty of access, all plasters were hand applied to a very high quality finish to allow painters to apply a lime distemper making this a truly wonderful restoration project. The judges were very impressed with the use of modern lightweight building systems to complete the restoration of this building, and in particular the vaulted ceilings.

This 200 000m² building was built to alleviate congestion in the original part of the airport and improve customers’ experience. It was necessary to construct within the existing operating environment of a busy international airport. Due to the scale and size of the project, 22 different types of partitions were used with differing acoustic, fire and thermal resistance performance criteria. The judges chose this project because “it is a superb example of how several different partition systems can perform in different parts of the building. The systems in Terminal 2 combined, security, acoustics, fire, impact and elaborate aesthetics all merging together seamlessly. A high degree of bespoke metal and board lengths were used, increasing the complexity. The obvious partnership approach between Gyproc and installer teams delivered this high performance building to a very high specification”.

This Arts centre is an impressive modern design, intended to be the centre of cultural activity in Asturias, hosting a wide variety of events including concerts, dance, gala evenings and live performances. A centre dome showcases the workmanship on this project. The judges were impressed by the way the plasterboard systems were used to form the many shapes necessary to complete the design. This coupled with the high performance in terms of acoustics management, insulation, thermal and fire criteria, make this a very impressive project.

Commercial

This iconic building, the venue for swimming, diving and water polo activities during the 2012 Olympic games, comprises medical, research, administrative and creche facilities. The partitions throughout use Moisture Resistant grade plasterboard and acoustic ceilings in public circulation areas. The Judges agreed “the challenge of creating a venue with a short term objective for use during the games coupled with high performance and a need to make partitions demountable for the longer term use of the building demonstrated the flexibility and sustainability of lightweight partition solutions”.

Titanic Signature Building

This is a truly Landmark building, set to become the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland, commemorating the Titanic cruise liner. It is located in the original shipbuilding yard where the Titanic was built and combines 6 floors of steel and glass, housing 14 000m² of civic museum, cafes, and a conference centre. The Judges commented “The building itself is visually striking and the interior finish mirrors the overall effect by intelligent design, excellent functionality and high levels of workmanship”. One of the key challenges of the project was to develop a bespoke wall lining system that could be fixed to the exterior cladding rails and mirror the angle of the structural wing-tips.

Innovation

The contractor chose an innovative solution to extend the ground floor and the 13th floor, using Aquaroc cement boards for the exterior layer. This pioneering cement boards solved all particular challenges generated by the refurbishment of this old hotel: lightweight, fire resistance, moisture and resistance to high wind loads. Due to ease of workability, exterior walls were rapidly installed and work finished 4 months earlier than scheduled. The Judges remarked that “The interior surprises the eye with its spectacular design and clever use of warm light which transforms and redesigns space. Design and functionality complement each other in a dynamic spectacle of abstract flowing shapes, while also respecting all technical specifications.”

Stadskantoor Nieuwegein

The town hall of Nieuwegein offers room for a substantial diversity of disciplines, including a library, centre of fine arts, social centre, social security offices and a number of retail outlets. The ambition of the town hall is to be a central community point for information, services, wellbeing, culture, meeting and debate. The Judges were “particularly impressed with the level of team work on this project, with the contractor not only responsible for the installation of the systems but also contributing to the unique design and performance requirements. The stairway was clearly an eye catcher and a real challenge for the contractor to install. The high acoustic performance combined with the height and the difficult construction conditions were very challenging and demonstrated real innovation in the installation of light weight systems”.

Segment solutions

This is a new build section on to an existing healthcare facility. The intention was to increase the size of the facility using up to date technologies, while retaining the homely feel in the nursing home. There was a time deadline to be met on this project and all key building constructions were based on innovative light weight systems . The use of value added light weight building systems boards and metal was extremely high to achieve the required performance. The performance complexity required strong liaison between all parties from planning and design to installation, and between them created a new way to use Saint-Gobain products in combination with other products. The judges felt that this was a worthy winner, as although not a landmark building, the use of lightweight systems was effective in achieving complex performance requirements for energy efficiency, acoustic and fire performance. This is truly a good example of our vision within innovative light weight building systems in a functional healthcare facility.

Humboldt Lecture Theatre

This lecture theatre is a renovation project which was designed based on the specific use of the building. The interaction of smooth, sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing perforated boards on the ceiling and walls created an acoustically effective overall structure. The shingle-type ceiling design gives the room an attractive appearance which is emphasized by the combination of variable indirect and direct lighting. The judges praised the craftsmanship demonstrated by the contractor in this project which perfectly interpreted the planned design and delivered the required performance for the lecture theatre. This room now offers a comfortable and effective space for the users coupled with a high visual impact.

In order to ensure that entries will be judged on an equitable basis, specific judging criteria were developed for this purpose and the International Jury was selected via a thorough process.

The 8^th International Jury was comprised of 8 members, a mix of central experts, country delegates and external contacts.

Patrick Atkinson

Jury President – Gypsum Activity Global Marketing Manager

Patrick has been in the building materials industry for 20 years. This is the fourth International Trophy awards he has been involved in and his third time on the Jury. In addition to support to a number of countries, he is responsible for the technical development training programme and centrally managed communications.

Rupert Neumann

Jury Member – Gypsum Activity Global Marketing Manager

Rupert has been in the building materials industry for 15 years. This is the 4^th International trophy awards he has been involved in, and his second time on the Jury. In addition to support to a number of countries, he is responsible for global Product Management of Building Plasters and Plasterboard Finishing within the activity.

Romuald Lassagne

Jury Member – Gypsum Activity Global Marketing Manager

Romuald has been in the building industry for 13 years and in the gypsum industry for 7 years. He is currently in charge of a number of central marketing functions including the international communications, sustainability topics, brand development and commercial support for South-East Asia. Previously he worked as Communications Director for Placo in France and he was a jury member at the 7^th Saint-Gobain Gypsum International Trophy in 2010, held in Amsterdam.
