Project description
Grand Hotel de Pera is a hotel building in the historical district of Beyoğlu in Istanbul. The project consists of the refurbishment of a historical building and another adjacent new construction. The hotel has 84 bedrooms, a restaurant, a cafe, meeting rooms, a spa centre, a swimming pool and a gym. The greatest challenges were to provide sound insulation for the bedrooms and moisture resistance for the high humidity conditions. The contractor successfully persuaded the building owner to switch from commonly used locally traditional block wall and iron box profile ceiling systems to advantageous Rigips plasterboard systems. This provided long life optimum comfort conditions and the approach also speeded up the wall and ceiling construction work.

Key Challenges
In Turkey, there is a prejudice against plasterboard systems with galvanized metal profiles. Block walls are preferred as partitions and iron box profiles are preferred if plasterboard is chosen to be used for the walls or ceilings. Decision makers in Turkey are not aware enough of the advantages of plasterboard systems with galvanized metal profiles. Iron box profiles are rigid elements anchored directly to the main load bearing structure and do not provide flexibility, which results in cracking problems. This wrong system gives plasterboard a bad reputation. This contractor had to fight against these prejudices and prove that Rigips plasterboard systems provide the best solutions for this project.
