Project description

The Kimpton BEM Budapest Hotel is one of Market Építő Zrt.’s most remarkable projects, resulting from the comprehensive reconstruction of a 19th-century building protected as a historical monument. The goal was to create a modern, premium hotel while preserving the historical value of the building, reflecting both Budapest’s architectural and cultural heritage. The design was executed by 3H Építésziroda Ltd., led by architects Katalin Csillag and Zsolt Gunther DLA, while the interior concept was created by Marcel Wanders. Construction began in december 2020, and after reaching structural completion, work continued with the impressive façade restoration and interior space design.

Key Challenges

The central atrium of the hotel, which includes the reception area, lobby, a restaurant, bar, and a sommelier room is rich in unique design solutions, particularly in terms of drywall construction.
The vaulted ceiling of the lobby, which is the first striking feature guests encounter upon entering the hotel, provides a spectacular and distinctive appearance.
The curved faux beams and the double-curved surfaces between them posed significant challenges for everyone involved in the project due to their complexity.
After numerous consultations and prototype preparations, the team succeeded in finding a structural solution and material combination that allowed this vision to become a reality.
Each faux beam and every segment was handcrafted on-site with meticulous attention to detail and expertise.
A significant part of the construction process was the archaeological excavation that took place over the course of a year. During this process, more than 200 coins and 1,300 crates of historical artifacts were recovered, which are now awaiting further research and preservation.
The hotel features 127 rooms with 40 unique floor plans, and its iconic central atrium will showcase a statue of the Golden Stag, honoring Hungarian folk tales. The building beautifully balances tradition and innovation, bringing Hungarian cultural motifs to life through modern design elements.
